Railsplitters' Rodriguez drafted by Rangers

On Wednesday, June 5, NYCMBL rookie Adrian Rodriguez got a glimpse of baseball beyond the boroughs when the hard-throwing youngster was selected by the Texas Rangers in 39th round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft.

Rodriguez — who pitches for the Yonkers Railsplitters — impressed scouts with both his stuff and his potential this spring, tallying 15 strikeouts in 8 innings of work thus far. The 6-foot-5 right-hander has also generated interest from college teams, and could pitch for Division 1 Towson University next year if he does not sign with the Rangers.

The Texas club has a history of drafting NYC-area players based on their men's league exploits. In 2013, the Rangers selected Long Island native Joe Palumbo in the 30th round of the draft after watching the southpaw compete in an amateur league. Palumbo has since emerged as one of the organization's top prospects and is slated to make his Major League debut on Saturday, June 8, against the Oakland Athletics.
